abdication [‚æbdɪ'keɪʃən]ⓘ THE ABDICATION CRISIS OF 1936 Le 10 décembre 1936, l'abdication du roi d'Angleterre provoqua une crise constitutionelle. La liaison entre Édouard VIII et Wallis Simpson, une américaine divorcée, était jugée incompatible avec les responsabilités et les devoirs du monarque et chef de l'Église anglicane. En octobre 1936, lorsque Mme Simpson divorça pour la deuxième fois, le spectre d'un remariage avec Édouard alarma le parlement, et provoqua l'opposition du gouvernement. Le roi décida d'abdiquer et dès le lendemain de son abdication il quitta Londres pour la France où, le 3 juin 1937, il épousa Wallis Simpson. Le successeur au trône, George VI, frère cadet d'Édouard, lui donna le titre de Duc de Windsor. -
